For almost half a century, Shelter has been righting housing wrongs – and fighting to make sure everyone has a safe affordable place to live. Every year, Shelter helps millions of people struggling with bad housing or homelessness – and we campaign to prevent it in the first place. We give vital advice and specialist support through our website, helpline and national network of advice centres.
However, every 11 minutes a family in Britain finds themselves homeless. It’s unacceptable.
For Louise, domestic violence left her fleeing her home and deep in debt with a young family to care for. The lasting negative impact of homelessness on her kids could be devastating. We know that children without a home are more likely to suffer mental health issues or miss out on school.
Unknown to her, her husband had stopped paying the mortgage when her marriage broke down. Louise tried hard to negotiate with the mortgage company, but she just didn’t know how to fix it. Finally, Louise and her four young children were evicted.
After a year living at a friend’s in a cramped and overcrowded flat, the council found her a B&B with only a single room and shared bathroom and kitchen areas. The conditions were grim.
‘There was nowhere for us to breathe.’
At the end of her tether, Louise contacted Shelter. Our expert housing advisers were able to step in and find a place for Louise so that her and her children could get their life back on track and look to a brighter future.
‘Being together as a family is the most important thing for me, but we couldn’t do that without a roof over our heads.’
But, we simply cannot do it alone. We need you to join Shelter and share in our belief that everyone should have a home. We promise that we won’t stop until there’s a home for everyone.
By being a payroll giver, you can stop people like Louise finding themselves homeless and give them a brighter future. And it’s the best way to give to Shelter as your donation is worth 20% to 45% more, depending on how much tax you pay.
